Burel Mountain Hotels
This project dates from 2014 and was commissioned by Burel Mountain Hotels, owners of another hotel in the area (Manteigas) and a burel factory (a woollen fabric, produced in Serra da Estrela). The building was a former inn, the Pousada de S. Lourenço, located at 1,200 m above sea level and with a breathtaking view of the Zêzere Glacier Valley.
The client's intention was to recover the building, as far as possible, but also transform it into the area’s first 5-star hotel, with all the necessary features. Architectural input was therefore necessary, so we chose to work with the Site Specific studio, our frequent partners.
The process, involving the architecture, the interiors and the graphic communication, was carried out in parallel. The architectural aspect, like the interiors, was based on a careful analysis of the site’s historical legacy.
Some of the furniture from the former inn was recovered and blended with contemporary pieces that were mostly designed specifically for this project.
All other furniture and decorations were of Portuguese origin and manufacture, in a clear homage to national design and manufacture.
Moreover, some designs by Maria Keil were taken up and reworked, defining the hotel’s graphic identity.
The graphics were used on various supports and with different technologies, carved and laser engraved on wood, engraved on leather and painted on concrete.
Some were also sewn in burel, whose technical characteristics – such as excellent sound absorption, so important for a 5-star hotel – were taken full advantage of.
Besides this feature, there were the advantages, in terms of both aesthetics and comfort, of using a “fabric” with warm, strong colours and the possibility of 3D “modelling”, painting, sewing, etc.
In the bedrooms, “L”-shaped burel planes embrace guests, as well as serving as headboards and closets/wardrobes, with applied graphic and iconographic features painted and/or sewn into the burel.
