Federação Portuguesa de Futebol
The environmental graphic design project for the new headquarters and training centre of the Portuguese Football Federation, in Lisbon, was requested by RISCO, the architecture studio which designed the complex. This project involved producing a signage system for the campus, and also the interiors for some special areas (dining rooms, the President's office and meeting room).
The concept behind it was all about creating a mood where the football atmosphere is felt everywhere, combined with the presence of “Portuguese identity” elements.
The graphic language started with the conception of a custom font for this project (CF TYPE), with the goal of creating a distinct and unique visual mood.
The font was inspired by the numbers of vintage football shirts from the 80s and 90s, which led to the design of the entire alphabet and also a set of custom pictograms that share the same “geometric DNA”.
In addition to this custom font, we used a secondary and more neutral font — Trade Gothic Bold.
The signage system and graphics used throughout the space aim to be effective (regardless of the different areas) and to also playfully engage the user or visitor.
This “playful layer” makes itself felt in a special way at times when parts of the national anthem are used unexpectedly on glass surfaces, or together with football chants on some walls “cheering on” Portugal!
The “Portuguese identity” is also present in the color coding (mostly red and green) and through the use of national materials in the interiors of some spaces.
A large part of the chosen furniture is by Portuguese designer, Marco Sousa Santos (CEO and creative director of the Branca Lisboa brand).
Also the ceilings of some special areas have a burel “skin” to help with the acoustics. This is an exclusively Portuguese felt, made entirely of wool by the Burel Factory brand.
