Assembleia da República
As part of the commemorations of the centenary of the Portuguese Constitution of 1911, the Assembly of the Republic (or Portuguese parliament) asked us to organise a temporary exhibition, to be held in the Passos Perdidos room, an antechamber to the Assembly.
The exhibition was to include the entire “construction” process of this Constitution, through excerpts from texts, speeches by members of parliament, contextual images, caricatures and documents, with some documents being original.
Due to the characteristics and strong identity of the room where the exhibition was to be held, we sought to reflect the surrounding environment through a rectangular structure covered by a mirror facing the visitors' entrance.
In the centre of the room, this 3m high by 14m long volume had the exhibition title and the original of the Constitution of 1911 on its mirrored face. The aim was also to communicate that we are all constituents: when visitors approached the mirror, they saw themselves reflected. The opposite side of the volume is an entire light box narrating the entire story in a graphic timeline that emulates newspaper layouts.
The catalogue ended as voluminous book of around 500 pages. Its cover was all white with only the title stamped in silver, alluding to the mirror, as was the inside cover. At the beginning, a fold-out 5 page booklet presents a photograph of all the constituent assembly members.
