Exhibition, Identity, Signage
Vasco da Gama Aquarium
Following the first intervention “The Prince who dreamed of the sea”, P 06 studio was invited to requalify the remaining exhibition rooms on the 1st floor at Vasco da Gama Aquarium.
On the 1st floor, the exhibition presents a curious King, his experiences, collections, experiences on the Yacht Amélia, and various specimens of marine animals.
The exhibition is divided in four segments. The King, which is consequently divided in two parts, the first about his adventures on the Yacht Amélia and the second on his Cabinet of Curiosities; the Sharks; the New Room and the New Staircase.
In the King’s segment, presented in the main room, the exhibition appears inside the King’s antique showcases.
The pagination, as a book that opens to the public, is punctuated with various three-dimensional elements that complement the adventures told.
The King’s travels on the Yacht Amélia are presented on a light background with illustrations from the King’s graphic diaries. This allows the cases stand out in a discreet and elegant way from the other elements in the room.
Three-dimensional elements such as naturalized birds, clocks, shells, illustrations, soup bowls, parts of the Amélia Yacht collection, allow the public to connect with the the King's journeys and marine explorations.
The King’s Cabinet of Curiosities is displayed on a dark background with application of scientific illustrations of the various species on display, captions and texts in white.
The Cabinet of Curiosities presents the most varied marine animals, otters, skulls collection. The collection and scenography transport the public to a study environment, full of mystery and curiosity.
In the Sharks Room, the collection is presented in a similar way to the Cabinet of Curiosities. On a dark background with the application of scientific illustrations of sharks and the environment where they are integrated, captions and texts in white.
In this room it’s intended to exacerbate the mystique that sharks naturally have. All specimens were exposed as if they were moving in their natural environment.
The New Room, renovated at the end of the 1980s, had a more restrained intervention.
The room was painted black with the intention of highlighting the large glass showcases, where various species of marine animals, cetaceans, shore birds, mammals, and dioramas are on display.
Subtitles and curiosities were also applied, in the form of text, onto the showcases which convey, in a very clear way, various information about the specimens to the public.
The New Staircase, which gives access to the New Room, is treated as a scientific compendium, where several specimens preserved in liquid are presented.
This compendium, inspired by scientific books, extends to the various landings of the stairs. Like a book that opens to the public.
Three-dimensional elements, which seem to escape from its pages, illustrations, colors, texts, titles, intent to create curiosity in the public in a dynamic way.
General circulation signage was also designed and applied in the exhibition areas. The signage is built with simple, three-dimensional graphics, applied directly to the different finishes on the walls of the Aquarium.
With the end of this phase, the renovation of the Vasco da Gama Aquarium’s Museum is concluded.
