Kopke is the oldest Port wine house in Portugal, founded in 1638. Located on the riverfront of Vila Nova de Gaia, it occupies a building with three floors that offers a direct visual connection to the Douro River and the city of Porto, within a sophisticated and immersive environment.
To enhance this experience, P06 was challenged to completely restructure the space, creating a distinctive concept that would celebrate Kopke's identity and legacy. This inspired the concept of the "wine library" — a project that transforms the shop into a true library, where every bottle tells a story.
The intervention aimed to create an immersive atmosphere that conveys the essence of Kopke, blending sophistication with symbolism. The interiors are lined with walnut wood cabinets, drawers, and display cases, meticulously designed to showcase Kopke’s wines with distinctive elegance.
Only natural materials — wood, stone, and metal — were used, establishing an authentic connection with the essential elements involved in the production and preservation of Port wine. The scent and texture of these materials envelop visitors in an atmosphere of refinement and tradition, reinforcing the sense of prestige that defines the brand.
The store unfolds across three floors, each dedicated to a distinct chapter in Kopke’s history.
On the first floor, visitors find a rhythmic and varied presentation of the brand’s different wines, expertly organized.
On the second floor, Kopke’s history comes to life through vintage labels and advertisements applied to the wood, culminating in the display of the certificate that recognizes Kopke as the oldest Port wine house in Portugal.
Finally, on the third floor, historical elements and everyday photographs reveal the brand’s evolution and essence over time.
Two majestic windows on each of the upper floors frame the Douro River and the city of Porto, turning the landscape into a true “living painting” that blends harmoniously with the store’s museographic concept. Every detail is thoughtfully crafted: the display elements are carefully labeled and framed, creating a continuous dialogue between history, design, and winemaking.
With its expertise in museography and interior design, P06 elevated the Kopke Store to a level where the brand’s heritage and the visitor experience intersect in an unforgettable setting. A true celebration of Port wine, its history, and its future.
