Inaugurated in 2022, the Sagres Promontory Exhibition Center is a modern exhibition and interpretative space, dedicated to telling the story of the Portuguese Discoveries and the strategic importance of this location.
It is structured in two areas: a permanent exhibition (on the ground floor) and a temporary one (on the upper floor).
The exhibition project is conceived as a journey of discovery through the history and mystique of the Discoveries, using an immersive and sensory approach with visual, sound, and tactile resources, avoiding an excess of multimedia to ensure the sustainability and longevity of the exhibition solutions.
Due to the pre-existing spatial compartmentalization, the story is told in a sequence of thematic “cells” with content expressed through large-scale graphics, models with kaleidoscopic effects, sound installations, environments with specific lighting, and sensory experiences.
The choice of this variety of communication strategies was based on the belief that the visitor’s journey should be marked by surprise and wonder, which certainly constituted an essential dimension in the lives of those who participated in the adventure of the Discoveries. Therefore, the visit seeks to recreate some of that sense of “wonder” that arises from the confrontation with and experience of limits.
Each room explores themes such as the “Sacrum Promontorium,” the figure of St. Vincent, Prince Henry the Navigator, the navigation experience, and the evolution of the Portuguese language in the 8 Portuguese-speaking countries around the world.
A highlight is the final room, which presents the immersive projection “The Journey” inside a spherical structure, resembling armillary spheres. In addition to the film projected on two separate synchronized levels, sensory environments (light and sound) are created to complement the experience, making it an engaging adventure.
A small catalogue with the exhibition content was also produced for visitors to take with them.
