Pillar 7, in 25th April Bridge (located in Alcântara), is one of the main pillars of the bridge. At its base, on the north bank of the River Tagus, it has the main cable anchors holding the bridge up. It was the site chosen to create this Interpretive Centre, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the bridge.
The project, involving both museography and communication, aimed to tell this story taking advantage of the bridge’s size to provide immersive experiences.
Here we have the opportunity to learn about its history, and get a close up view of the number and size of these cables that structure the bridge, as well as enjoy the view at deck level.
The free standing entrance sign, about 5m high, bears the name «P7».
As visitors, we are taken to the beginning of the route, outside, where a sequence of large corten steel ‘discs’ on the pavement contain laser-cut information.
We then go inside the pillar where the original model, presented in 1966, is located and where we can learn the history and some interesting facts.
Then we enter a room we are submerged in a 360º projection, with footage of the bridge construction. Moving to another room, where a hologram of the sea creates a blue environment, we feel as if we were in the river watching the model of the bridge above us.
Climb up and visit the cable anchor site, which in itself is worth the visit due to its incredible scale.
Next, we have a room with a set of mirrors on the floor and ceiling, creating a sensation of vertigo and fathomless depth. Communication graphics were painted on the concrete walls.
Finally, we can climb to the bridge deck and enjoy the surrounding view.
