In 2016 we were invited by the architect Frederico Valssasina to participate in the design of the interiors of the Diwan of Imamat Ismaili in the Palacete Henrique Mendonça, a building classified as a national monument located at the top of Parque Eduardo VII in Lisbon.
The project distinguishes itself in two interventions: the rehabilitation of the existing building and the construction of an underground annex to allocate the new covered parking and the technical areas.
The building underwent an upgrade of all infrastructures with the aim of equipping the spaces with all the comforts of a contemporary office. The delicate challenge we faced was the control and concealment of the entire technical interface in space, canceling out its visual intrusion as much as possible, and resorting to solutions that discreetly integrated with the existing architecture. The execution went through a process of survey and discussion on site, through mock-up carried out on site in full scale to test its effectiveness and feasibility.
The choice of materials and finishes inside the building was always carried out with the aim of preserving the Palacete’s environment, in continuous dialogue with the traditional ancestral techniques used in its original creation.
The suspended ceiling in Jardim D’Hiver is the result of a reinterpretation of the original design of the existing structure, made up of metallic beams interspersed with vaults, where the concave elements were replaced by removable modules in sound-absorbing material and the space between the beams used to integrate the ventilation grilles and lighting rails.
The presence of fan coil units in the main halls required the design of specific solutions so that the machinery could be hidden and harmoniously integrated into the space.
For the cladding of the walls of the new bathrooms, the choice was made to reproduce the existing tiles in the old bathrooms in an artisanal way, with the intention of preserving the original atmosphere of the mansion.
The approach to the parking lot, as it is a new construction, is more contemporary, creating a welcoming monochrome environment defined by a minimal and accurate signage design. In the offices, priority was given to comfortable and practical furniture, opting for solutions with classic and refined lines, without compromising the aesthetic side with the use of noble materials and velvety fabrics.

The final purpose of the project was to preserve the palace's original environment, subtly and cautiously calibrating the “invasion” of profound infrastructural updating, where the future can harmoniously dialogue with the past.
