To commemorate the 500th anniversary of the birth of Luís de Camões, Portugal’s most celebrated poet and national hero, a special exhibition has been created to showcase Carvalho Monteiro’s extensive collection.
The exhibition features an extensive collection of books, historical representations and artistic tributes, offering visitors an immersive journey into the poet’s world.
The project aimed to modernise the traditional format of the exhibition while maintaining the historical essence of Camões’ influence.
The primary challenge was to break away from conventional, static exhibition designs and instead introduce a dynamic and visually engaging experience. Our goal was to create a space that not only honored Camões’ literary and cultural contributions but also invited visitors to explore his legacy through a fresh, contemporary lens.
The conceptual approach revolved around transparency and lightness, symbolizing the ethereal quality of poetry and history. We envisioned a scenography composed of transparent architectural elements that allowed visitors to navigate through layers of literature and historical context seamlessly. To achieve this, a lightweight metal framework was developed, covered with a continuous printed canvas. This canvas served both as an exhibition surface and as a visual metaphor for the fluidity and continuity of Camões’ literary influence.
The exhibition walls, embedded with showcases and niches, provided an intimate yet structured way to present rare books, manuscripts, and artistic interpretations of the poet. The transparent fabric not only softened the environment but also reinforced the installation’s conceptual narrative: a delicate balance between the past and present, tradition and modernity.
The exhibition successfully transformed the traditional experience of literary commemorations, offering an engaging and contemporary interpretation of Camões’ legacy. Visitors were immersed in a poetic journey, where the interplay of light, transparency, and historical artifacts created a unique and memorable atmosphere.
The innovative approach was well-received, reinforcing the timeless relevance of Camões’ work and setting a new standard for future cultural exhibitions.
The exhibition's communication, invitation, banners, posters, mupi, billboards, pennants, bookmarks and advertisements were also designed. The exhibition catalogue is currently being prepared.
