FON (Focused on Nature)
Exhibited in Lisbon at the National Museum of Natural History and Science, ‘The Living Sea’ uses the extraordinary photographs of Hussain Aga Khan as a point of departure to raise social awareness towards the sublime beauty, complexity and fragility of life in the oceans. We were invited by the museum to produce the project for the exhibition, which we divided into two rooms.
Our goal was to create an experience as immersive as possible, a simulation of a Hussain Aga Khan dive, for the visitor to feel the images just as they were taken.
In the first room, ‘The Living Sea’, we created a sandy floor in a dark blue environment. The exhibition route was set up by 5 big light boxes, displaying photographs and information on each marine animal selected.
There was a life-size photograph in front, with other images and complementary information behind. The exhibition was punctuated by Hussain’s comments on certain photographs, which were highlighted to better convey the photographer's feelings.
At the end an installation made up from thousands of suspended nylon wires and plastic waste on the ground, intend to alert to the dangers of plastic pollution in the oceans, one of Hussain’s great missions.
The second part, ‘Among the Giants’, comprises a white room, much like a typical art gallery setting. The space includes photos of humpback whales alongside quotes of the photographer while in the middle of the room, a replica of a humpback whale takes center stage.
We also design the exhibition catalogue, that aimed to enable visitors to take away some of the photographer's best-known images and his message in defence of the planet's sustainability.
